‘Catastrophic’ category 5 hurricane Iota hits Nicaragua just 2 weeks after region was devastated by tropical storm (VIDEOS)

Hurricane Iota has hit Nicaragua, tearing roofs off buildings and mowing down trees as authorities order evacuations. Forecasters say it could be deadlier than Hurricane Eta, which killed more than 170 people this month.

The hurricane has made landfall near the town of Puerto Cabezas in northeastern Nicaragua as category 4 with winds of 155mph. It then quickly intensified and was upgraded to "catastrophic" category 5.

The National Hurricane Center in Florida warned that Iota’s "extreme storm surge" could produce a life-threatening impact with "destructive winds and potentially 30 inches of rainfall."

Videos on the ground show powerful gusts of winds crushing palm trees as torrential rains flooded buildings.

Reports by local media said that strong winds tore the roof off a hospital in Puerto Cabeza and did the same with corrugated metal sheets on houses.

Evacuations were conducted in Nicaragua and neighboring Honduras. The Nicaraguan military posted photos of its soldiers distributing aid and helping with the evacuations.

There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Nicaragua is still reeling from the widespread destruction brought by category 4 Hurricane Eta, which ripped through Nicaragua, Guatemala and Honduras just two weeks ago, killing more than 170 people across the region and leaving many homeless.

Iota came ashore just 15 miles south of where Eta arrived on November 3, and is expected to cause even more damage than its predecessor.

Developed West is managing Covid-19 worse than poorer countries – new sensational claim from France’s most well-known virologist

Posted by RT on April 22, 2020  |   Comments Off on Developed West is managing Covid-19 worse than poorer countries – new sensational claim from France’s most well-known virologist

The world’s experience with Covid-19 has exposed the fact that wealthy nations are not necessarily more prepared than poorer ones to deal with a pandemic and they are often too slow to act, French biologist Didier Raoult said.

In a video posted on YouTube, Raoult noted that many of the countries with the highest coronavirus mortality rates are “wealthy countries.” This reveals “a disconnect between wealth and the ability to respond to situations of this kind.”

The difference could lie in how rich and poor countries have chosen to deal with the virus, Raoult believes.

“The rich and developed countries have had less significant results than the poor countries, which chose to treat [Covid-19] like pneumonia with common drugs and which cost nothing,” he said.

Raoult has been at the center of an international debate over the use of the hydroxychloroquine anti-malaria drug which he promoted as a possible treatment for the coronavirus, citing his own small study and some positive experiences with the drug in China.

Faced with a pandemic, the choice is whether to begin treating patients with existing drugs or conduct studies to find new ones.

“If we start doing research which ends when there’s no disease anymore, we can’t fight it,” he said.

“We decided to treat the disease and you got some extremely violent reactions because of this decision,” he said, referring to backlash from other doctors, officials and media.

While Raoult has adamantly defended his approach, there is still no solid evidence that hydroxychloroquine actually works against the coronavirus.

The most recent study was conducted on sick veterans in the US. In that study of 368 patients, which is not yet peer-reviewed, about 28 percent of the Covid-19 sufferers treated with hydroxychloroquine died of the infection, while only 11 percent of those receiving routine care died.

On Twitter, Raoult slammed the US study as “fraudulent” and “fake news.” He said that the patients treated with hydroxychloroquine were already in critical condition.

Chris Pratt labeled misogynist online after poking fun at his wife’s cooking skill

Hollywood star Chris Pratt was accused of “shaming” his wife and called a sexist online after he shared a story about his spouse accidentally burning a bagel.

The ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ star posted a lighthearted story about his wife Katherine Schwarzenegger’s cooking on Instagram. “Proud of my darling for trying to cook tonight. Did it go well? No. No it did not. Not at all,” the actor sarcastically wrote, attaching a picture of what appears to be a heavily burnt bagel.

“To quote Rocky Balboa, ‘It’s not how many times you get knocked down, it’s how many times you get up... and keep moving forward,’” Pratt continued, saying that the bagel “never stood a chance” against his spouse.

I honestly simply cannot imagine what went wrong here. Pretty simple. Microwave. 2 minutes. Maybe she thought it said 2 hours. But I want to commend her for her effort. This is a big step babe. Proud of you.

Schwarzenegger apparently had a good laugh as well. “Looks like my plan to just have you do the cooking is working out very well,” she wrote playfully in a comment to her husband’s post. Her brother Patrick joined in the fun with “Smh” (‘shaking my head’). Actress Yvonne Strahovski and Pratt’s co-star Karen Gillan reacted to the whole thing by posting smiley faces.

For what it’s worth, even ‘woke’ news outlets like BuzzFeed and HuffPost did not think Pratt’s attitude was somehow problematic. The reporter for the former admitted to “honestly cackling” while reading the actor’s post, while the latter threw in a pun about Pratt “roasting” his wife.

But then some in the online crowd showed up to label Pratt as a sexist. “Ladies, this is the kind of posts that happen when you marry a misogynist,” one person wrote. “@prattprattpratt May hide it pretty well, but the misogyny rings loud and clear through the sarcasm... may think you’re trying to be funny at her expense. Real comedy is not made at the expense of others.”

Others quickly accused the actor of being “condescending” to his wife and said that by poking fun at her cooking Pratt tried to “publicly shame” his spouse.

Some angry commenters went further, suggesting that the actor should cook his own food instead of complaining. “Make your own damn bagel bites, @prattprattpratt. You’re 40,” one person wrote.

Well that’s exactly what Katherine Schwarzenegger said her plan was from the start, didn’t she?
